OMAHA, Neb. – Battling several injuries, the short-handed Creighton women's tennis team outlasted Missouri State for a 5-2 victory in the Bluejays home-opener on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 1-1 on the season, while Missouri State fell to 0-3 overall.
"This was a strange match with injuries pulling players out of competition," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We came out strong again in doubles, making me proud of the strides we have made there. Bianca played very strong and Ana won some big points to earn our singles victories."
Creighton started Saturday's action with doubles victories at the top two positions. Seniors Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher combined for a 6-2 win at the top doubles spot, while junior Ana Paula Martinez and freshman Olivia Minikel sealed the first point of the match with a 6-2 triumph on the No. 2 doubles court.
Lead 1-0 heading into singles play, the Bluejays immediately claimed a 3-0 lead earning default victories on the No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts.
Missouri State picked up their first point of the match when junior Annika Elvestrom was forced to retire due to an injury just one game into the first set.
Rademacher clinched the match for the Bluejays a short while later, after Missouri State's Tuana Gunal conceded with an injury in the second set.
Missouri State's Lucy Latham captured the Bears lone win, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win on the No 2 singles position.
Martinez would then close out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory at the No. 3 singles spot to claim the 5-2 win for the Bluejays.
