Women’s Tennis Coasts to 6-1 Victory Over Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Creighton women's tennis team coasted to its first road win of the season, topping former Missouri Valley Conference rival Northern Iowa, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Bluejays improved to 2-1 on the year with the win, while the Panthers suffered their fourth loss of the season.
"All things considered, this was a solid match for us," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our team has been battling injuries and illnesses for the past 10 day. Northern Iowa is a good team, and this is not an easy place to play, so we did a good job of not making excuses and putting in a good effort throughout. Valerie competed well per usual but has been under the weather and ran into a player that played loose and outlasted her in a 10-point tiebreaker. Everyone else played strong tennis and took care of business on the road today."
Creighton heated up quickly, earning victories at all three doubles positions to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Freshmen Karli Vo and Alem Cote got things started with a quick 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court, while sophomore Ana Paula Martinez and freshman Olivia Minikel teamed up for a 6-2 triumph at the No. 2 position to give Creighton the early advantage. Seniors Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher also pulled out a 7-5 victory at the top doubles spot.
The Bluejays continued to take control of the match, earning five consecutive straight set wins to clinch the overall dual.
Cote easily won 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 6 singles court, while Rademacher claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top spot to remain perfect in singles play this season. Minikel followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the No. 5 singles court to clinch the match for the Bluejays.
Martinez added to the Bluejays lead with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the No. 4 singles spot, while freshman Pippa Roy outlasted UNI's Andjela Raznatovic, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, for her first singles win of the dual season.
Northern Iowa's lone point came at the No. 2 singles, where Lorena Cardoso outlasted Negin. Negin won the first set, 6-4, before Cardoso evened the match with a 6-1 win in set two. Cardoso then followed with a 10-8 victory in the third frame to close out the match.
Creighton returns to the court on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. when it takes on Gustavus Adolphus in a neutral site contest in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
