TUCSON, Ariz. – The Creighton Softball team suffered its fifth straight loss as the Bluejays opened play at the Bear Down Fiesta with a 6-2 loss to Coastal Carolina and a 7-3 setback to Utah Valley on Friday in Tucson, Ariz.
The pair of losses dropped the Bluejays to 2-5 on the year, while the Chanticleers improved to 3-4 and the Wolverines moved to 4-3 overall.
Game 1: Coastal Carolina 6, Creighton 4
The first game of the day saw the Chanticleers use their power to score one in the second, three in the third and two more in the fifth, before holding off a late Bluejay rally in the seventh to pick up a 6-4 victory.
After a scoreless first, Coastal dented the scoreboard with a solo home run from Moira Baxter in the second to put the Chants up 1-0.
Coastal Carolina added to their lead in the third when Georgia Hood blasted a two-run homer and Kaelin Cash backed it up with a solo shot to right to give CCU a 4-0 edge.
Creighton would cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as Avery Barnard doubled to center before coming in to score the Jays first run of the game on an RBI double from Ella Dalton.
An RBI single from Izzy Ramirez and an RBI groundout from Clara Hudgens capped off the scoring for the Chanticleers as the two-run fifth gave them a 6-1 lead.
Down to the final three outs, Creighton loaded the bases using a pair of singles from Erika Perez and Barnard, as well as a walk to Dalton. Senior Ashley Smetter then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left, before a two-run double from freshman Zoey Greenwood cut the deficit to 6-4. It, however, wasn't enough as the Chanticleers held on for the victory.
Audrey Gilman took the loss for CU, allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work. Barnard and Dalton accounted for four of the Jays eight hits in the contest.
Game 2: Utah Valley 7, Creighton 3
In game two, the Wolverines jumped on top in the first as Bailey Marvin laced an RBI triple to right to give Utah Valley a 1-0 lead.
UVU added four additional runs in the third as the first five Wolverines reached base safely. Kendyl Purdy led off the frame with a tripled before coming in to score on a walk and Bluejay throwing error. Amber Rodriguez and Emma Haygood followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, before a sacrifice fly from Angelique Mann gave UVU a 5-0 edge.
The Jays cut the deficit to four in the top of the fourth when Perez smacked her first home run of the season over the left field wall.
Utah Valley, however, took advantage of three Bluejay errors in the bottom half of the frame to take a 7-1 lead.
Creighton would not go away quietly as freshman Keegan Mayhue launched her first career home run to deep center field to make it 7-2 in the seventh inning. Dalton would follow with a hit-by-pitch, before an RBI double from Greenwood cut the deficit to 7-3.
Greenwood finished the day 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, while junior Brooklyn Patchen suffered her second loss of the season after allowing four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
