The Bluejays had their program record 10-game regular season BIG EAST win streak come to an end, falling to 12-16 on the year and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. Providence, meanwhile, improved to 8-11 overall and 2-1 in league action with the pair of victories.
GAME 1: Providence 8, Creighton 7
In game one, Creighton built an early 6-0 lead in the first two innings, before Providence rallied with three runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to steal an 8-7 victory.
CU came out firing using a double from Zoey Greenwood and an RBI single down the left field line from Lily West to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays ignited once again in the bottom of the second inning as Ella Dalton doubled down the left field line and Ashten Pierson reached on a hit-by-pitch, before scoring on an RBI single from Avery Barnard. Greenwood would then draw a walk to load the bases for West, who blasted her first grand slam of the season to extend the Jays lead out to 6-0.
Providence countered with three runs in the top half of the third on an RBI single from Cameron Dunn and a two-run homer from Sofia Peterson to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Friars would continue their comeback in the fourth, taking advantage of a Bluejay throwing error, a walk and a three-run home run from Julia Renny to knot things up at 6-6.
Creighton regained a 7-6 lead in the bottom half of the fifth when Erika Perez led off the frame with a triple down the left field line and pinch runner Meghan McCutcheon came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Dalton.
The Bluejays lead didn't last long as Providence took its first lead of the game with a two-run double from Elisa Smith in the top of the sixth to seal an 8-7 victory.
Providence's Tori Griforne picked up her first win of the season, while Brooklyn Patchen suffered the loss for the Jays. West led the Bluejays offensive with two hits and five RBI while Tara Vandewater contributed two hits of her own.
GAME 2: Providence 6, Creighton 3
In the second game of the doubleheader, Providence used an RBI single from Renny and a sacrifice fly from Brianna De La Fuente to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Creighton immediately responded with three runs in the home half of the frame to surge out in front 3-2. Barnard opened the game reaching on a Friar error and advanced to third on a single from Greenwood, before scoring on a perfectly executed steal of home. One out later, Vandewater launched a two-run home run over the right center field wall to put the Jays out in front 3-2.
Following a scoreless second, Providence regained the lead as Dunn laced an RBI double into the left center field gap and scored three pitches later on a wild pitch to give the Friars a 4-3 advantage.
Providence would tack on two additional runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Gabriella Lee and a bases load walk from Renny to close out the 6-3 victory.
Vandewater paced the Bluejays with two hits, while Landrie Harris (0-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Creighton returns to the Creighton Softball Stadium on Wednesday, March 18 when they take on Iowa State at 6 p.m.
