OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team dropped a 2-0 pitcher's duel to crosstown rival Omaha on Wednesday night at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
The Bluejays fell to 27-24 on the season with the loss, while the Mavericks improved to 32-9 overall.
After two scoreless innings of work from Bluejay starter Ava Drehs, Omaha broke a scoreless tie in the third using a leadoff single from Sammy Schmidt, a walk to Ava Rongisch and an RBI single down the left field line from Rylinn Groff to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Creighton threatened to level the contest in the home half of the frame as junior Ashten Pierson singled up the middle but was cut down at the plate trying to score on a double into the right centerfield gap from freshman Zoey Greenwood.
Following a scoreless fourth, Omaha extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth with a 249-foot solo home run from Taylor Sedlacek to straight centerfield.
Creighton once again posed a threaten in the bottom of the fifth, placing runners on second and third with a pair of singles from Keegan Mayhue and Ella Dalton and a sacrifice bunt from Pierson, before Omaha ace Maddia Groff closed the door to keep the Jays scoreless.
Groff picked up her team-leading 14th win of the season, picking up three strikeouts in the six-hit complete-game shutout. Sedlacek led the way offensively for the Mavericks with three hits and an RBI while Rylinn Groff drove in the only other run of the game.
Drehs (4-3) suffered her third loss of the season, allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work, while six different Bluejays collected a hit in the loss.
Creighton will close out the regular season this weekend with a three-game set against DePaul at the Creighton Softball Stadium. The series opener between the Bluejays and Blue Demons is set for Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m.
