INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 9 seed Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 8 seed Providence at the Wynne Tennis Center in a First Round match of the BIG EAST Tennis Championship Presented by New York Life Thursday afternoon.
CU senior Jennie Hartjes' win at No. 1 singles helped her move into No. 3 all-time on the women's tennis program wins list with 132 total victories.
Creighton (10-12) dropped the doubles point to Providence (9-10) to open the match. The Friars swept matches on doubles courts three and one to claim a team point for an early 1-0 lead.
CU freshman Darby Rosette evened the match at 1-1 after a victory at No. 3 singles. Rosette took the first set in extra games at 7-5 before her opponent retired.
PC later jumped out to a 3-1 lead with straight-set victories on courts six and four.
Hartjes pulled the Bluejays to within one at 3-2 after a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
But the Friars won the team match point with a tight victory on singles court five.
“You have to give credit to Providence,” said head coach Tom Lilly, “for stepping up and being the deeper team today in the tough elements. We just did not have our best effort in doubles or at the bottom half of our singles lineup. They were the better team today.”
No. 9 seed Creighton is slated to play a consolation match against No. 10 seed Villanova on Friday at 2 p.m. CT, weather permitting.
