Women's Soccer Falls to Butler on Late Goal, 1-0
10/18/2018 8:09:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Despite a strong effort against a team receiving votes in United Soccer Coaches poll, the Creighton women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Butler on Thursday, Oct. 18.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 6-9-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in BIG EAST play, while Butler rose to 11-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play.
Defending their own goal for much of the first half, the Bluejays limited Butler to just seven shots until a flurry in the final minute of the frame sent the Bulldogs into halftime with a 10-1 edge in shots.
Creighton responded quickly to open the second period freshman Aline Reinkober and sophomore Ashleigh Cearlock each had looks at the goal. Butler goalkeeper Leonie Doege, however, saved Reinkober's shot and punched the ball away just before Cearlock could head it on frame.
As the match moved towards the 76th minute the Bluejays appeared to be building for shot, however the Butler defense cleared a Creighton pass to the middle of the field. Moments later Butler found Halle Stelbasky along the left side. She bent a crossing shot into the right back corner from just outside the box for the lone tally of the match.
Butler closed the match up 21-3 on shots and edged the Bluejays 6-3 on corners earned.
Creighton returns home for senior night on Sunday, Oct. 21 as the Bluejays host Marquette at 1:00 pm in Morrison Stadium.
