Fighting to reach the BIG EAST Tournament, Women's Soccer Hosts Marquette on Sunday

Omaha, Neb. -- Entering Sunday's match in a tie for fifth place in the BIG EAST, the Creighton women's soccer team are looking to reach the conference tournament for the first time since 2012. The Bluejays can guarantee a spot with victories in each of their final two matches. That path begins as the Bluejays send off seniors Kaira Houser and Maureen Kerr prior to the contest.

Series History: Creighton Trails Marquette, 3-5-1
The Bluejays return home for senior day as Creighton battles the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 21. Creighton has had some success against Marquette since joining the BIG EAST, claiming a 3-2 overtime win the last time the two teams met in Omaha. Marquette holds a 5-3-1 series edge on Creighton and holds a 4-1-0 edge since the squads joined the BIG EAST in 2013.

Scouting Creighton (6-9-0, 3-4-0 BIG EAST)
Splitting two road matches that each ended in 1-0 decisions (1-0 win at Villanova on Oct. 14 and a 1-0 loss at Butler on Oct. 18) have left the
Bluejays in control of their own fate with just two contests remaining in the regular season.
Creighton faces Marquette on Sunday, then heads to Providence for the regular season finale next Thursday.
The Bluejay defense has been strong for as the Bluejays have held the opposition to one goal or less in each of its last three contests.
Creighton's offense, however, has delivered just one goal in two matches. More concerning is that the Bluejays were out shot 42-10 over in those two contests.
Scouting Marquette (3-11-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST)
Although the Golden Eagles come to Omaha having dropped three straight, Marquette has a little bit of momentum having pushed #4 Georgetown to double overtime on Thursday.
Marquette enters the contest with the Bluejays having notched 10 goals on the season, including four in seven BIG EAST matches. Although the offense has struggled, the Golden Eagles defense has kept them in most matches. Goalkeeper Maddy Henry leads the BIG EAST with 93 saves on the season.
Bluejays Can Define Their Season with Victories Over Marquette and Providence
With two matches remaining in the regular season the Bluejays control their own destiny. Creighton enters Sunday's match with Marquette having nine points and in a tie for fifth place. With two victories the Bluejays will claim their first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament.
If the season were over the Bluejays would be the fifth seed, holding the tiebreaker over Villanova thanks to their 1-0 win on Oct. 14.
Providence and DePaul, each sit just one point outside the tournament field with eight points. Each squad also controls its fate as DePaul faces Villanova on Sunday, while Providence battles Creighton to close the season next Thursday.
Bluejays and Golden Eagles Hold Only Goals Against the Hoyas
Seven matches into the BIG EAST season just two squads have sent a ball into the back of the net against Georgetown. Those two teams meet on Sunday as Marquette comes to Creighton. The two goals came at very different stages of the
respective battles with #4 Georgetown. Marquette took a 1-0 lead in midway through the second half on Thursday, while Creighton's tally came with the Bluejays down 5-0 in the second half.
Homecoming for Two Golden Eagles
Marquette goalkeeper Maddy Henry and midfielder Rachel Johnson will be returning home on Sunday as pair are both from Omaha. Henry spent her high school at Millard North, while Johnson attended Marian.
Seniors Kaira Houser and Maureen Kerr to be Honored Prior to Match on Sunday
Prior to Sunday's final home match against Marquette, Creighton will honor seniors Kaira Houser and Maureen Kerr. The duo enter Sunday's contest having both appeared in 68 matches. Playing primarily at the top, Houser has earned 30 starts and delivered 11 goals. Kerr, meanwhile, has anchored the back line with 46 starts in four seasons.
