Omaha, Neb. -- Despite falling behind 1-0 in the fourth minute, the Creighton women's soccer team rallied to post a 2-1 win over Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 5-8-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall dropped to 2-8-4 overall and 0-5-0 in conference action.
The first shot of the match resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Pirates as Marissa Aniolowski tossed a ball deep into the Creighton defensive box, A failed clear left an open look for Seton Hall's Alyssa Reszkowski, who lifted the shot over Creighton goalkeeper Katie Sullivan to give the Pirates a 1-0 edge in the fourth minute.
Creighton answered in the 24th minute with three precise touches that yielded the game-tying goal. Sophomore Keelie Fothergill started the play by centering the ball behind her to junior Taryn Jakubowski. The Illinois native threaded a pass between two defenders to the center of the box for junior Kylin Grubb to send into the back of the net. It was Grubb's third goal of the season as she claimed a tie for the team lead, while knotting the match at 1-1.
Fothergill set up what proved to be the game-winning goal just over 13 minutes later, this time finding senior Kaira Houser for her second goal of the season along the right side of the box. Houser beat Seton Hall's Anna MacLean to the right from eight yards away to give Creighton a 2-1 edge in the 37th minute.
The match moved to halftime with the Bluejays up 2-1.
The second half saw Seton Hall take a much more aggressive approach, out shooting Creighton 11-2 in the final period. The Bluejay defense, however, proved equal to the task to earn the BIG EAST win.
For the match the Pirates held a 14-10 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage on corners.
The Bluejays don't return to the pitch for a week as Creighton plays three of its final four matches on the road, beginning at Villanova at 12:00 pm (CT) on Oct. 14.
