9/23/2018 4:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- Junior Taryn Jakubowski nudged the game-winning goal past Xavier keeper Toni Bizzarro in the 86th minute to give the Creighton women's soccer squad a 1-0 win over the Musketeers on Sunday, Sept. 23rd.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-5-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 6-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.
Battling through a tough second half that saw the Musketeers play more aggressive soccer for the first 35 minutes, the Bluejays turned the table down the stretch. Freshman Aline Reinkober got things rolling for the Bluejay offense when she returned in the 83rd minute. Senior Kaira Houser lofted in Creighton's first shot in over 30 minutes with 83:35 showing on the clock, the deflection resulted in a Bluejay corner. Creighton's first set piece of the second half gave Reinkober a look from 25 yards, which Bizzarro deflected out of bounds, resulting in another Creighton corner. The Bluejays went to Reinkober once more. Bizzarro was equal to the challenge a second time, but junior Jaylin Bosak headed the deflected shot back to the right side of the pitch for Jakubowski to swiftly send into the back of the net at the 85:12 mark.
In the final five minutes the Musketeers managed two corners and two shots, but Creighton's defense completed the shutout to secure the win.
The first half of the match was more evenly contested with Xavier taking a 10-7 shot edge into the break.
The Bluejay victory marked just the second time Creighton has opened BIG EAST play with a victory, Creighton also did so in 2016.
In the match with the Musketeers on Sunday, Creighton was out shot 23-13. Xavier also held a 6-2 advantage on corners.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 27th as the Bluejays host St. John's at 7:00 pm in Morrison Stadium.
