OKATIE, S.C. -- Freshman Katie Allen capped off one of the most impressive seasons in program history by helping the Creighton women's golf team to a fifth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep on Sunday.
Creighton's 958 total was its best 54-hole score in any league meet since a 946 total in the 2009 MVC Championships, and 35 shots better than last year's effort on the same course. In addition, the fifth place showing matched the program's best mark at a league championship in the last 25 years along with CU's final fifth place standing in the 2014 BIG EAST Championship and the 2005 MVC Championship.
Allen bookended rounds of 78 with a 75 to close the weekend in 10th place with a 231 aggregate. The Phoenix, Ariz., native led all freshmen in the tournament, and her 77.7 stroke average is a full shot better than the best mark by a Bluejay in the last 16 seasons (Sarah Eversman, 78.7, 2017-18). It was Allen's second top-10 finish of the season. Allen's 10th place showing was the best by a Bluejay at a BIG EAST Championship, besting a tie for 13th place by Kelsey Petersen in 2013-14. Allen is CU's first top-10 finisher at a league championship since Celeste Gassman placed fourth in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Sophomore Amelia Lee was Creighton's second-best finisher, taking 20th after rounds of 85, 79 and 76 for a 240 total. That was just ahead of classmate Margaret Hickey's 23rd place showing following rounds of 80, 82 and 85 for a combined 247 strokes.
Seniors Sydney Gillespie and Rachel Grenko closed out their Bluejay careers in the meet. Gillespie tied for 25th place with a 249 total after circuits of 80, 86 and 83. Grenko was 27th after loops of 89, 83 and 79 for a 251 total. The meet also marked the finish of the senior season for Caroline Lake and Kelsey Johnson, neither of whom participated in the BIG EAST Championship.
Creighton's 318.2 stroke average for the season ranked as the program's best mark in the last 16 seasons, a full two shots better than the previous low (320.3) set a year ago.
Led by meet medalist Mikayla Fitzpatrick, Xavier led from start to finish to win the team title, the program's first since joining the BIG EAST. Xavier (298-306-306=902) won by 14 shots over two-time defending champion Georgetown to clinch an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
Fitzpatrick finished with an even-par 216 total on the par 72 Callawassie Island course that measured 5,965 yards and featured 30 players among six teams. Her second round 68 tied for the second-lowest score in BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship history and helped her win the meet by nine shots over Seton Hall's Lizzie Win (74-73-78).
