VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Creighton women's tennis team earned a come-from-behind 5-2 win against South Dakota on Friday afternoon at the DakotaDome Courts in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Friday's match marked the Bluejays' first competition outside during 2021.
Creighton improved to 7-3 overall, while the Coyotes fell to 2-6.
South Dakota clinched the first point of the day by winning at the top two doubles positions. At No. 3 doubles, Emma Gener and Malvika Shukla combined for a 6-2 win, the duo's sixth doubles victory of the season.
Despite dropping the doubles point the Bluejays responded by winning at five of the six singles positions.
Kate Krueger sealed the overall match with a three-set win at the top singles slot. The Omaha native fell in the first set, 6-3 but tied the match with a 7-5 win in the second. The sophomore earned her sixth singles win of the year and the Bluejays' seventh overall win of the season with a 6-2 victory in the deciding third set.
Shukla, Joanna Nowakowska and Erin Epperson each won in straight-sets, while Sarah Wilcox ended the afternoon with a three-set win at No. 2.
Shukla stayed unbeaten in singles action with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 and improved to 6-0 during singles play, Nowakowska won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Epperson claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6. Wilcox lost in a tiebreaker during the opening frame at the No. 2 position before winning 6-2 in the final two sets to end the day.
"This was a very tough match and could have gone either way," head coach Tom Lilly said. "I'm very proud of Sarah and Kate for mounting tremendous comebacks. Kate was down and it looked like her match was over at one point, but she never gave up and was the clincher. Our depth really showed again and even though we didn't have our "A" game in doubles, our girls were very gritty today in singles."
Creighton stays on the road and travels to Grand Forks, North Dakota for a match against North Dakota on Saturday afternoon. First serve between the Bluejays and Fighting Hawks is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
