OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory over Marquette on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center for the Bluejays' first win in nine tries against the traditional BIG EAST powerhouse.
The Bluejays improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 against BIG EAST foes, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-4 and 0-2 versus league teams.
Creighton started the day by winning the doubles point. The Bluejays' top doubles team of Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox recorded a 6-1 win before Malvika Shukla and Emma Gener tallied a close 7-5 win in the No. 3 match.
Wilcox and Krueger extended Creighton's advantage to 3-0 with straight-sets wins at the top two singles positions. Wilcox won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Krueger won 6-2, 6-4 at the top slot.
Marquette notched its first point with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Malvika Shukla sealed the overall match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Joanna Nowakowska also claimed a straight-sets win at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
"We played a very solid match and had to handle some tight situations in doubles and singles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We got off to a great start in doubles and had to hold on at the end. Marquette has a great program, so we knew they would make a run. I'm proud of our girls for fighting so hard."
Creighton returns to the courts on Friday for a match against UNO. First serve between the Bluejays and Mavericks is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Miracle Hills Tennis Center.
