Bluejays earned wins in the first set at No. 1 and 3 singles but neither match finished
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Wichita State on Tuesday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Bluejays dropped to 7-5 this season, while the Shockers improved to 8-13.
Wichita State took the doubles point with wins at the bottom two positions. Creighton's Gabby O'Connor and Joanna Nowakowska dropped a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 position, while Erin Epperson and Malvika Shukla also fell by a 6-2 margin at No. 3.
The Shockers wrapped up the match with wins at the No. 2, 4 and 6 singles slots. Bluejay sophomore Kate Krueger won the first set at No. 1 singles, while Shukla won 6-3 in the first frame at No. 3. Both women trailed in the second sets but neither of the matches were finished before Wichita State earned three straight-sets wins to clinch the overall match.
"I thought we competed well against a tough team but just missed out on some opportunities in doubles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "In singles the wind was definitely a factor on both sides of the net and Wichita State just played a better match in the elements. We will continue to get better and work through some things that we need to improve for this team to reach its potential."
The Bluejays return to the courts on Friday for a match in Omaha against Nebraska-Kearney. First serve between the Bluejays and Lopers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
