1/22/2022 5:14:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The Creighton men's tennis team delivered a 4-3 victory over Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 22.
The win moved the Bluejays to 1-3 on the season, while Grand Canyon fell to 0-3.
Saturday's battle began in strong fashion for Creighton as the Bluejays claimed the doubles point with victories in both the second and third doubles positions. The Jays were also leading the top doubles match 5-4, when the point was decided. Shin Inoue and Jose Oscar Diaz earned the first victory with a 6-2 win over Martim Marujo and Adrien Coulome. Moments later the team of Stratto Brown and Zack Maline delivered a 6-2 win over Wyatt Anderson and Freddie Grant. At the top doubles position, Casey Ross and Matthew Lanahan were leading 5-4 over Mariano Argote and Jiri Novak.
Holding a 1-0 lead entering singles play, Grand Canyon answered with straight set victories at the fourth and second singles matches. Ross rallied his squad with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win over Argote at No. 1 singles, evening the match at 2-2.
Grand Canyon's Grant put the Lopes on the verge of claiming the match with a win at the third singles slot, besting Lanahan 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) and 7-5 in a three-set slugfest.
Refusing to be denied, the Bluejays fifth and sixth singles players posted victories to claim the match.
Ethan Neil evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anderson, then Oscar Diaz complete the Creighton comeback with a 6-4, 7-5 win in the fifth position over Coulome.
"Tennis is such a mental game in college and both teams had their share of ups and downs," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We squeaked out a few close ones today, but had opportunities on every court. We definitely need to get stronger in those big moments and I hope this was a learning experience and the start of us doing that."
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, February 11 in a match at Wichita State at 1:00 pm.
