Women’s Tennis Drops Chicago State, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Chicago State on Saturday night at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
Creighton improves to 4-2 on the year with their second sweep of the season, while the Chicago State fall to 4-7.
Valerie Negin and Milvika Shukla got the Bluejays started on the right foot with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 doubles position. Negin and Shukla have now won their last four double matches at the No. 2 slot.
Kate Kruegar and Sarah Wilcox claimed a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point for the Jays. Meredith Benson and Gabby O'Connor trailed 4-2 at the No. 3 doubles slot before the top two double slots finished.
The Jays extended their lead with a pair of straight-set victories at the No 3 and No. 2 single slots.
Sarah Wilcox claimed her fourth straight singles win when she defeated Sofiya Sedovich 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles position, before Valerie Negin earned a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 slot to hold a 3-0 lead.
Chicago State's Cali Fuller earned the win at the top spot after Krueger retired in the third set with an injury. The Cougars cut the Jays lead down to one as Katarina Dukic tallied a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles position.
Holding a slight 3-2 lead, Creighton's Shukla battled to a three-set win over Chicago State's Katarina Drazic. Shukla posted a 6-2 win in the first set, but Drazic responded with a 7-5 win in the second frame. Shukla clinched the match for the Bluejays by earning a 6-3 triumph in the third set.
Allison Wilcox closed out thewin for the Jays with a three-set win at the No. 6 position. Chicago State's Susana Andres grabbed the early advantage with a 6-2 first set win. Wilcox answered immediately with a 6-4 victory in set two before claiming the match with a 10-5 win in set three.
"This match had almost everything. Our girls had to battle against a tough team that just kept coming," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Unfortunately, Kate had to stop with an injury, but we hope that she recovers quickly. It will be a tough one tomorrow morning but I know our girls are going to compete hard."
Creighton returns to the court tomorrow morning for a 9 a.m. match against former Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
