Bluejays claim pair of straight-sets win in singles
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.. – Battle tested with injuries, the Creighton women's tennis team captured their first road win of the season by earning a 4-0 victory over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
Creighton improved to 5-3 on the year, while Missouri State fell to 0-7.
The Bluejays held an early advantage in doubles play as Jeanne Gearity and Meredith Benson earned the win by forfeit at the No. 3 slot due to injuries within the Missouri State lineup. Kate Krueger and Gabby O'Connor clinched the doubles point for Creighton with a 6-4 win over Missouri State's Mara Presot and Juliette Robinson at the No. 2 doubles position.
Creighton extended their lead with straight-set wins at the No. 3 and 4 single positions to clinch the match for the Jays. Sophomore Malvika Shukla defeated the Bears' Sandra Lukacova 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot after Allison Wilcox earned the victory at the No. 6 position due to forfeit to give the Creighton a 3-0 lead. Benson earned a 7-5, 7-5 triumph at the No. 4 singles slot to secure the 4-0 victory for Creighton.
Krueger won the first set 6-4 and was tied 5-5 in the top singles spot, while freshman Valerie Negin dropped the first set, 6-3, before claiming the second frame 6-0 and was trailing 4-3 in the third set at the No. 2 singles position before the Jays earned the victory.
"We limped down to Springfield with several injuries and missed Sarah due to an illness," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Missouri State is having their fair share of difficulties as well but both teams battled hard. We won some big points and were able to survive today. Will need to heal up as we have a tough spring break schedule coming up but I'm proud that we were able to get the win on the road without a few starters."
The Bluejays return to the court on Monday, March 7 when they open BIG EAST play against Providence in Orlando, Florida.
