Scouting #7 Akron (9-0-5, 2-0-3 BIG EAST)
In its first season in the BIG EAST, Akron remains undefeated at 9-0-5. The conference slate, however, may have been tougher than the Zips expected with three draws in five matches. The Zips are 0-0-2 in road BIG EAST contests.
The Akron offense has a dominant scorer in Jason Shokalook, who has a BIG EAST leading 13 goals and 30 points on the season. Shokalook has just under half of Akron's 28 goals as a team.
Defensively the Zips have allowed just seven goals in 14 matches, including three to Providence in the first BIG EAST match of the season. Goalkeeper Mitch Budier has seen action in 11 matches (947:37), collecting seven wins and posting a 0.57 GAA.
Scouting Creighton (3-5-5, 2-2-1 BIG EAST)
With three matches remaining in the regular season, Creighton hosts #3 Akron on Wednesday. The Bluejays enter the match tied for seventh with Seton Hall in the BIG EAST. The expanded conference tournament would allow Creighton a spot, but Butler, Villanova and Marquette are certainly in striking distance at two, three and four points back.
Â
Freshman Miguel Arilla remains atop the Bluejay scoring column with three goals and four assists, giving him ten points.
In goal the Bluejays have gone with sophomore Blake Gillingham over the last seven matches. Blake has allowed nine goals (1.29 GAA), making 31 saves.
Can the Bluejays Flip the Switch Once More
Heading into the final day of BIG EAST play in 2022, the Bluejays found themselves needing help from Marquette to nab the final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. With new life Creighton certainly made the most of the opportunity, winning seven consecutive matches to reach the program's sixth College Cup.
This season head coach Johnny Torres' team sits tied for seventh place with three matches remaining. The Bluejays host #3 Akron on Wednesday, face Connecticut at home on Saturday, October 21 and close the season at St. John's on October 28.
