OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team battled for nearly four hours before claiming a 4-3 victory over Omaha on Friday night at the Miracle Hills Tennis Center.
With the win the Bluejays improve to 3-0 on the year, while Omaha falls to 1-3 overall. Creighton has now won 14 straight matches against the Mavericks and improved to 3-0 for just the second time in the last 10 years.
Junior Malvika Shukla and graduate transfer Leanne Kendall gave Creighton an early advantage with a 6-0 win at the No. 1 doubles position. The Bluejays lead early on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, but Omaha responded late at both positions, claiming the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Bluejays rallied quickly taking a 2-1 edge in the match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles positions. Shukla struck first with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 straight-sets win at the top slot, while junior Bianca Rademacher claimed a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot.
Omaha evened the overall match at 2-2 with a straight-sets triumph at the No. 6 singles spot. Minutes later Creighton regained a 3-2 lead with a 7-6, 6-3 win at the No. 4 singles position by Kendall.
With the match still up for grabs, the Bluejays and Mavericks battled it out on courts No. 2 and No. 3. Freshman Ana Paula Martinez opened her singles match with a 7-5 win in set one but suffered a 6-4 setback in set two. In the decisive third set, Martinez overcome an early 2-1 deficit to win set three, 6-2 and clinch the match for the Bluejays.
Omaha's Zoe Adkins claimed a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 singles position, but it was two late as the Bluejays already claimed the overall victory.
Creighton returns to the courts on Saturday afternoon for a match against former Missouri Valley Conference foe, Bradley, at 3 p.m. inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
