FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Creighton women's tennis team fell, 5-1 to No. 43 Colorado State on Sunday afternoon at the Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 12-5 on the year while Colorado State improved to 11-2 overall.
The Rams secured the first point of the afternoon with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Colorado State claimed a 6-2 victory on the top doubles spot while freshman Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Valerie Negin combined for a 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 doubles spot the Bluejays. In the decisive third doubles match, Colorado State's Sarka Richterova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, the Rams picked up victories at the top three singles positions to clinch the overall dual, before sophomore Siri Kongara claimed a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the No. 6 singles spot for Creighton's lone point of the match.
Graduate Leanne Kendall battled to a hard fought 7-5 win in set one and led in set two before Richterova responded to secure a 7-6 (7-1) win and force a decisive third set. A back-and-forth final frame, saw Richterova overcome an early deficit to claim a 10-7 win at the No. 5 singles spot.
"We had some chances today against a ranked team and just didn't capitalize," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It's unfortunate that the score will go down as 1-5, as we thought we had two more match wins, while our doubles could have been the difference today. It was a better match than yesterday with a lower altitude and more confidence, but we just could pull it out. We are looking forward to a great match on Wednesday in Lincoln.
The Bluejays return to the court on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they travel down I-80 to face off against Nebraska at the Dillon Tennis Center.
