Bluejays snap three-match losing skid
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory over Marquette, snapping a three-match losing skid, on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The win lifts the Bluejays to 13-6 on the year and 4-2 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette fell to 5-10 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Creighton started the day on the right foot, winning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshman Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Valerie Negin teamed up for a 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles position, while senior Kate Krueger and junior Bianca Rademacher combined for a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 slot.
In singles play, the Bluejays clinched the overall dual with triumphs at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions.
Rademacher took care of her opponent quickly, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot, while sophomore Siri Kongara won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles slot to give Creighton a 3-0 lead. Graduate transfer Leanne Kendall then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tiana Windbuchler at the No. 6 singles spot.
Marquette notched its first point of the match with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win by Emilija Kojcic at the top singles position, before Elisabeth Desmarais earned the teams second point with a 5-7, 6-2, 11-9 tiebreaker win at the No. 2 singles.
Negin closed out the match for the Bluejays with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 11-9 victory at the No. 3 singles slot to give Creighton the 5-2 win.
"This was a good match that testes us mentally," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We were able to win some big points when we needed them. Our doubles continue to get better and Marquette is well coached and always talented so this was a good conference win."
Creighton returns to the courts on Sunday afternoon when they host Doane at 1 p.m. at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
