SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Creighton women's tennis team blew past South Dakota with a 5-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 15-6 on the year, while the Coyotes fell to 4-13 with the loss.
Creighton secured the first point of the day with doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Valerie Negin and Ana Paula Martinez combined for a 6-3 win in the No. 2 slot, while Kate Krueger and Bianca Rademacher clinched the opening point with a 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 spot.
The Bluejays continued their winning ways with wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No.6 singles positions to clinch the overall dual.
Rademacher claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 singles spot to increase the Bluejays lead to 2-0, a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win at the No. 2 slot by Krueger gave Creighton a 3-0 advantage. Leanne Kendall then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 6 spot for the Bluejays.
Negin added to Creighton's lead with a three-set victory at the No. 3 singles position. The Colorado native captured a 6-2 win in set one but fell in set two 6-0. In the decisive third set, Negin quickly claimed the victory with a 6-2 win.
South Dakota's lone victories came during a pair of three-set matches at the No 1 and No. 5 singles positions.
"I knew this would be a close match and we would need to compete well in order to get the result we wanted," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We let a few sets slip after winning the first but I liked how we regrouped when we needed to and competed well throughout."
Creighton returns to action on Friday at 2:30 p.m. when they travel to take on McPherson in Kansas.
