DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton women's tennis team posted five victories during the first day of the Drake Invite at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday evening.
The Bluejays' weekend trip to central Iowa marked the beginning of the 2023 fall schedule.
The pair of Valerie Negin and Malvika Shukla advanced to the Doubles Blue championship with a pair of victories. The dup opened the afternoon with a 8-6 win over Andrea Jansson and Jule Schulte before claiming an 8-2 victory over Theodora Chantava and Clara Whitaker in the semifinals.
Junior Allison Wilcox and senior Jeanne Gearity recorded an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker victory over Issa Sullivan and Kanyanut Sudsaard in the quarterfinals but fell to Selena Bird and Hitakamya Narwal Singh in the semifinals, 8-5.
Sophomore's Ana Paula Martinez and Annika Elvestrom claimed an 8-5 victory over Kim Zizek and Andrijana Brkic before falling to Elizabete Klainska and Oriana Parkins, 8-2, in the semifinals.
In singles play, Shukla captured the Bluejays only victory, topping Brkic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. With the three wins today, Shukla now sits at 96 career victories.
"We played some solid doubles and at times Malvika and Valerie were tremendous," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Singles, however, weren't what we were hoping for, but we have had a lot of injuries and some individuals that haven't competed since the Big East tournament in April and that just isn't a good recipe for success."
Creighton continues play at the Drake Invite on Saturday morning.
