MILWAUKEE, Wis. – All leveled at 3-3, sophomore Annika Elvestrom picked up a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory to lift the Creighton women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Marquette on Friday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.
With the win the Bluejays improved to 9-5 on the season and 2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-14 overall and 0-2 in league action.
Marquette took an early 1-0 lead, claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin teamed up for their sixth straight doubles win at the top positions, capturing a 6-4 victory over Andie Weise and Lara Kaiser.
In singles play, the Bluejays rallied with wins at the top three singles positions to level the match at 3-3, before Elvestrom clinched the match with a three-set win on court No. 6.
Junior Bianca Rademacher continued her dominance in singles action, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets win on the No. 2 singles court. Negin then followed with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 2 position to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Marquette, however, would answer with wins on the No. 4 and No. 5 singles courts to regain a 3-2 advantage, before Shukla captured a 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 three-set win at the top singles position to level the match at 3-3.
All tied up, Elvestrom overcame a one-set deficit to claim a 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 win to clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays.
"Marquette came out firing in doubles and took it to us," said head coach Tom Lilly. "I'm impressed by how our team fought to the end. It could have gone either way and we needed two players to win after losing close first sets. That shows some resiliency and mental toughness. Credit to both teams for competing hard as it really could have gone either way and we were fortunate to escape with a win in a place we have never won against Marquette."
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday afternoon for another BIG EAST conference matchup against DePaul in the Windy City. First serve between the Bluejays and Blue Demon's is set for 12:30 p.m.
