OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team opened its five-match homestand with a 4-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Thursday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 10-6 on the season with the win, while the Golden Eagles fell to 5-10 overall.
Senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin started Friday's action cruising to a 6-2 victory at the top doubles position, earning their sixth consecutive doubles win at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Annika Elvestrom and senior Jeanne Gearity combined for an identical 6-2 win at the No. 3 slot to clinch the doubles point for the Bluejays.
Creighton then closed the match with a pair of straight-set singles victories on the No. 4 and No. 6 courts, as well as a three-set win at the No. 5 singles position.
Sophomore Ana Paula Martinez rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles spot, while Elvestrom claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory on the No. 6 singles spot. After dropping the first second 6-4, junior Siri Kongara rallied to seal the dual victory for the Bluejays with a 7-5, 6-0 three-set triumph at the No. 5 singles position.
"This was a challenge and Oral Roberts fought us hard," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We played better doubles and came out strong in some of the singles, but ORU never went away and played hard. We earned the win and were looking good on the matches that did not finish. We will rest up and get ready for another tough match tomorrow against Kansas City."
It's a short turn around for the Bluejays as they are scheduled to take on Kansas City on Friday, March 29 at 12:30 p.m. inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
