ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team fended off a late Fairleigh Dickinson rally to earn a 4-3 victory at the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 8-5 on the year, while FDU fell to 2-6 overall with the loss.
"This was a good start to the outdoor season," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We certainly didn't play our best at each position, but we needed to get some experience competing outside and Fairleigh Dickinson is a tough team to start with."
Creighton quickly jumped out to 1-0 lead claiming doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Junior Annika Elvestrom and freshman Olivia Minikel teamed up for their fifth consecutive doubles win, capturing a 6-3 victory over FDU's Namie Isago and Valentina Silva. Freshmen Philippa Roy and Karli Vo then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory on the No. 3 doubles court.
The Bluejays carried their early momentum into singles play, clinching the overall dual with straight set victories at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions.
Senior Bianca Rademacher give Creighton a 2-0 advantage, rolling to a 6-0, 6-2 straight set victory over Isago at the top singles position. Minikel followed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory of her own at the No. 6 singles slot, before Elvestrom clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph on the No. 4 singles court.
FDU, however, closed out the match strong, claiming wins on the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions. Anastasia Lim picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win on the No. 2 court, while Alena Kubanova captured a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 three-set victory on the No. 3 singles court and Valentina Silva claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win on the No. 5 singles spot.
Creighton will be back in action tomorrow night when they take on Niagara at the San Lando Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
