ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Niagara on Wednesday night at the San Lando Tennis Center during the squads second day of competition in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays moved to 8-6 on the year with the loss, while Niagara improved to 5-9 overall with the win.
"This was a tough loss," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Despite having a few starters out, we were good enough to win this match. We just aren't handling situations very well when things get tough. I hope we learn from this and get better."
Senior Bianca Rademacher and freshman Olivia Minikel got the Bluejays off to a strong start in doubles, earning a quick 6-2 victory on the top doubles court. Niagara, however, responded with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the first point of the match.
Creighton picked up the first two wins in singles play, taking a 2-1 lead, before Niagara claimed victories at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 singles positions to secure the overall dual.
Rademacher opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph on the No. 1 singles court, improving to an impressive 9-2 this season at the top singles position. Sophomore Elsa Jurrens then collected her second singles win of the year, taking down Niagara's Amelia Greenawalt in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to give CU a 2-1 advantage.
The Purple Eagles, responded with a 6-4, 6-0 win on the No. 2 singles court to level the contest at 2-2, before regaining the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 singles spot. Niagara would then clinch the dual with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 singles position from Larisa Kotok.
The Jays would not go down quietly though as Minikel closed out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 three-set victory on the No. 4 singles court.
Creighton is back in action on Thursday when they close out their spring break trip with a match against Connecticut College at 3:30 p.m. CT.
