OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Marquette, 5-2, in a BIG EAST showdown on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 10-6 on the year and 1-2 in BIG EAST play with the win, while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-15 overall.
"Marquette is a well-coached team that competed hard today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "I'm glad we were able to stay confident after losing the doubles point. We are continuing to manage injuries but that is no different than any team this time of year. We will need to play and compete well tomorrow against a strong North Dakota squad."
Marquette earned the first point of the match, collecting wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead. Creighton soared out to an early advantage as junior Ana Paula Martinez and freshman Philippa Roy captured a 6-2 victory on the No. 2 doubles court. Marquette, however, answered with a pair of 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the doubles point.
The Bluejays responded rather quickly in singles play as senior Bianca Rademacher cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot to level the contest at 1-1. Martinez followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph on the No. 3 singles court, before Roy captured a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 4 singles spot to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.
Junior Annika Elvestrom would then clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win on the No. 5 singles court to secure the Bluejays first BIG EAST win of the season.
Freshman Alem Cote picked up a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 three-set victory on the No. 6 singles court, before the Golden Eagles closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory at the no. 2 singles spot.
The Bluejays will wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. when they host North Dakota for their senior day match at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
