Women’s Tennis Edges Out North Dakota, 4-3, During Senior Day Victory

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team won the doubles point and carried momentum into singles play before hanging on for a 4-3 victory over North Dakota on Saturday night during senior day at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 11-6 on the year, while the Fighting Hawks fell to 12-6 overall with the setback.
In a back-and-forth affair early, Creighton earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Playing their final home match as a Bluejay on Saturday, seniors Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher teamed up for a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. After North Dakota earned a 6-3 win on the No. 2 doubles court, junior Ana Paula Martinez and freshman Philippa Roy combined for a 6-4 triumph on the No. 3 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
The Bluejays carried momentum into singles play as Negin rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to claim a 6-4, 6-3 victory on the top singles court to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
North Dakota responded with straight set victories at the No. 3 singles spot from Jule Schulte (6-4, 6-1) and No. 6 singles position from Alyssa Giuppoin (6-3, 6-4) to level the contest at 2-2.
Creighton answered with a 7-5, 6-3 straight sets win on the No. 5 singles court from freshman Olivia Minikel to regain a 3-2 advantage for the Bluejays. Martinez then rallied from a one-set deficit with 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph on the No. 2 singles court to clinch the overall dual.
With the match already in hands, North Dakota's Nore Heinitz rallied from a one-set deficit of her own, closing out the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 three-set win on the No. 4 singles courts.
Creighton will return to the courts on Friday, April 4 when they travel south to take on former Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State at 4 p.m. in Kansas.
