VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Creighton women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon in the Bluejays regular season finale in Vermillion, S.D.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 11-7 on the year, snapping their three-match win streak, while the Coyotes improved to 10-8 with the win.
Creighton opened Tuesday's match in fine fashion, claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Seniors Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher combined to earn a 6-4 victory at the top doubles spot for their ninth doubles win this season, before junior Ana Paula Martinez and freshman Philippa Roy clinched the doubles point with an identical 6-4 win on the No. 3 doubles court.
With today's win at the top spot, Negin surpassed former Bluejay Sarah Cadwallader for third on Creighton's all-time career doubles wins list with her 64th victory.
"We have known all year how good South Dakota could be if they were on their games," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Credit to them as they are well coached and very talented. Today they took it to us in singles and we just didn't have enough to get over the hump in a few sets. Our injuries hurt us but South Dakota was the better team regardless."
South Dakota, however, regrouped and earned the dual victory with straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles spots and a retirement win at the No. 4 singles position.
USD's Selena Bird won the first set, 6-1 and led 1-0 in set two before Roy was forced to retire at the No. 4 singles spot. Grace Cadick then captured a 6-2, 6-0 win on the No. 5 singles court to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead. Sorcha Caves followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on the No. 2 court, before Amanda De Oliveira clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph on the No. 3 singles court.
Rademacher picked up the Bluejays lone singles win at the top singles spot, rallying from a one set deficit to defeat Beata Havlickova, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 in three sets.
Freshman Olivia Minikel also split her first two sets at the No. 6 singles position before retiring down 4-2 in the third set.
Creighton will return to action on Thursday, April 17 in the 2025 BIG EAST Championships at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, South Carolina.
