Nettkoven and Gehred break marks.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Anika Nettekoven and Natalee Gehred broke their own school records to highlight the day for the Creighton Track teams on Friday afternoon at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa. That wasn't all, as Jacob Ludwick and Logan Piper also set CU records on Friday.
"Really good day at Jim Duncan with an absolute load of PRs," said head coach Chris Gannon. "Both Anika and Carly broke the previous school record in the 800. Jacob had a solid throw in the javelin that puts him in a good place to move forward this season, and the men's 800 and 5K crews also ran really well, with four guys sub-15."
Nettekoven placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:13.58, breaking her school-record of 2:14.71 from just a week ago. Carly Manchester (2:13.88) finished one spot behind Nettekoven in fifth place and also broke the previous CU record.
Gehred smashed her own mark in the 400 as she crossed the finish line in 1:00.77 to place 10th and eclipse her CU-best time of 1:02.33 from a year ago.
Katherine Soule had Creighton's best showing of the day on the women's side, finishing as the runner-up in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:31.29.
Sophia Valentine's debut throwing the javelin saw her finish in sixth place (26.33 meters), while the 4x400 relay team of Gehred, Katie Roche, Manchester and Nettekoven also placed sixth in 4:02.87. Additionally, Alexis Leone took 13th in the 1,500 with a time of 5:02.57.
The Bluejay men were paced by second-place finishes from javelin thrower Jacob Ludwick (64.43 meters) and Noah Jodon in the 5,000 meters (14:43.56). Jodon was one of five Creighton runners to finish in the top eight of the 5K race, joining Henry Slagle (14:49.13; 4th), Ryan Montera (14:52.72; 5th), Eli Moore (14:53.84; 6th) and Lucas Bossinger (15:02.30; 8th). Ludwick's distance was a school-record and puts him in the mix for a spot at Regionals at the end of May.
Marcos Gonzalez crossed the finish line fourth in the 1,500 (3:57.89), just ahead of seventh-place teammate Tommy Murray (3:58.80). Brian Hiltebrand (1:51.21) was fifth in the 800 and Rhys Cushman (51.79) was 17th in the 400.
CU's 4x400 relay of Logan Piper, Jake Ziebarth, Diego Barron and Cushman was sixth in a time of 3:23.64. Piper also broke a school-record in the 400 hurdles (55.79), taking down his time of 56.11 in late March, as he placed sixth in the meet.
"It'll be an upcoming off-week for most of the team," added Gannon. "We have a handful heading to Wake Forest and KU Relays for some elite fields."
