DES MOINES and INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Creighton's Jake Ziebarth smashed his school-record time to win the unseeded 1,500 meters at the prestigious Drake Relays on Thursday evening. Ziebarth's victory was part of a busy Thursday that saw 29 Bluejays compete in either the Drake Relays or the Kip Janvrin Open
Ziebarth clocked a time of 3:46.74 in the 1,500, topping his previous school-record of 3:48.45 last April at the Bryan Clay Invitational. He edged out Indiana State's Emerson Fayman (3:46.78) at the tape to emerge as champion in the field of 22 runners over two heats.
"Fantastic race, school-record and PR for Jake," said head coach Chris Gannon. "Coach Fayers has done an incredible job with the mid-distance crew."
Marcos Gonzalez and Ryan Montera also competed on the famed blue oval at Drake on Thursday night. Gonzalez was 25th in the steeplechase in a season-best time of 9:11.63, while Montera was 13th in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 30:57.56 to end the evening.
The remainder of the Creighton line-up competed just outside Des Moines at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
Six Bluejay men ran in the 1,5000, with Evan Kraus (3:56.70) and Henry Slagle (4:00.24) leading the way with seventh and 17th place finishes, respectively.
The Jays also had five men in the 5,000 meter race. Noah Jodon clocked a time of 14:43.06, exactly a half-second better his previous best, to place fourth. Lucas Bossinger (15:23.78) finished 31st in the 5K.
CU's success in the 1,500 wasn't limited to its men. Fourth place Carly Manchester (4:38.85), 11th place Anika Nettekoven (4:46.29) and 18th place Katie Roche (4:49.16) all finished in the top 20 with personal-best times.
In the 5,000 meter race at Simpson, Katherine Soule and Taylor Rorick both closed in the Top 10. Soule (17:43.96) took seventh, one spot ahead of Rorick (17:47.67).
Action resumes on Friday at the Kip Janvrin Open, while javelin thrower Jacob Ludwick will compete among a top-tier field at the Drake Relays on Saturday.
