OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team continued its winning ways, cruising to a 7-0 sweep of Northern Iowa on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
Creighton pushed its winning streak to four straight, climbing to 5-2 on the season, while Northern Iowa dropped to 1-5 overall.
"We let a few things rattle us in doubles at the top 2 spots but were able to regain some momentum at the end of each match," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our singles play was strong throughout and we will need to play well tomorrow again against a strong Missouri State team."
Dominating early on, the Bluejays rolled out to a 1-0 lead, clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshmen Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit didn't drop a game in a 6-0 win on court 3, while senior Annika Elvestrom and sophomore Olivia Minikel combined for a 7-5 win at the No. 2 doubles position to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage.
CU carried their momentum into singles play, earning straight set wins on all six single courts to complete the 7-0 sweep.
Sophomore Alem Cote got things started with a 6-3, 6-0 win on the No. 6 singles court, while Tran capped off a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets win at the No. 4 singles spot to push the Jays out to a 3-0 lead.
Elvestrom then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets win on the No. 5 singles court, before senior Ana Paula Martinez claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 singles position.
The Bluejays would finish off the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 singles spot by Dixit, and a 6-1, 7-5 straight-sets win at the top singles spot by sophomore Sophie Schwartz.
Creighton will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the host Missouri State in a 2 p.m. match at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
