Women’s Tennis Opens Orlando Spring Break Trip with Clean Sweep of Providence

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team swept Providence, 7-0, on Tuesday morning at the USTA National Campus during the Bluejays first spring break match in Orlando, Fla.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 10-3 on the year and 2-1 in BIG EAST action, while improving to 56-10 overall in matches played in the Sunshine State. The Friars, meanwhile, fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in league action with the loss.
"This was a good start to our outdoors season," said head coach Tom Lilly. "I thought we competed well and will need to step it up again tomorrow against the defending BIG EAST conference champs."
Creighton quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead, claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. Sophomores Sophie Schwartz and Alem Cote teamed up for a 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, before Providence's Camila Barrera and Sophie Ahlberg answered with a 6-2 win on the No. 3 doubles court to level the match. Freshmen Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit, however, delivered a 6-2 win at the top doubles spot to clinch the first point of the match and give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays carried their early momentum into singles play, clinching the overall dual with straight set victories at all six singles positions.
Dixit gave Creighton a 2-0 lead, racing to ta 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win at the No. 2 singles spot. Tran followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory of her own at the No. 3 singles slot, before senior Annika Elvestrom clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph on the No. 4 singles court.
Schwartz then claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot to give the Jays a 5-0 lead. Freshman Livia Daud Rodriguez would follow with a 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win at the No. 6 singles spot, before Cote closed out the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on the No. 5 singles court.
Creighton returns to the courts in Orlando on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. CT match against Xavier
