Softball Tops Georgetown on Senior Day, 8-4

Creighton honored seniors Lily West, Erika Perez, Ella Dalton and Ashley Smetter as part of Senior Day
OMAHA, Neb. – A five-run fifth capped off by a grand slam from freshman Keegan Mayhue lifted the Creighton Softball team to an 8-4 win over Georgetown on Senior Day at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
With the win, Creighton jumped to 23-21 on the year and 11-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas fell to 14-16 overall and 7-8 in league action.
The Bluejays broke a scoreless tie in the third as junior Avery Barnard beat out an infield single and came around to score on a two-run double into the right centerfield gap from senior Lily West to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
Creighton would then extend its lead in the home half of the fourth when senior Erika Perez laced a two-run homer, her eighth home run of the season, over the left centerfield wall to push the advantage to 3-0.
Georgetown answered in the top of the fifth as Naya Campos blasted a three-run homer to left to level the contest at 3-3.
CU, however, responded quickly using a leadoff walk from Zoey Greenwood, a single from Barnard and a double steal, before retaking the lead on a Georgetown wild pitch. Junior Kaelan Schultz and sophomore Tara Vandewater then drew a back-to-back walk to load the bases for Mayhue, who launched her team-leading 10th home run and second grand slam of the season to put the Jays out in front for good at 8-3.
The Hoyas would push across one in the seventh on an RBI single from Taylor Francis to make it 8-4, before freshman Audrey Gilman closed the door to record her 11th win of the season.
Mayhue and Barnard led the way for the Bluejays with three hits apiece, while West collected a pair of doubles in the victory. With her two doubles on Saturday, West pushed her career total to 35 doubles and moved into a tied with Kailey Wilson and Bailey Dawson for eighth on Creighton's career doubles record board.
Following the game, the Bluejays honored Lily West, Erika Perez, Ella Dalton and Ashley Smetter during its senior day festivities.
Creighton will return to action next weekend when they travel to Queens, N.Y. to battle St. John's in a three-game BIG EAST series.
