Scouting Creighton (3-5-0, 0-0-0)
The onset of the conference season brings new a fresh start as now each match carries the additional weight of points meant to bring a squad to the BIG EAST Tournament.
For the Bluejays the BIG EAST schedule seems to be coming at the perfect time. Creighton played one of its best matches of the season against #20 Oklahoma State, despite playing without two of its top defenders. Both Haylee Blach and Jaylin Bosak were sidelined with injuries against the Cowgirls, yet the Bluejays limited OSU to two goals an created its share of dangerous chances on offense.
Scouting Xavier (6-4-0, 0-0-0)
The non-conference season has been interesting for the Musketeers to say the least. Xavier won its first match over Toledo (2-1 on Aug. 17), then dropped its next four. During the losing streak the Musketeers were outscored 9-1, including 7-0 in the final three. Once the calendar flipped to September Xavier's fate changed as well, claiming its last five matches. During the winning streak the Musketeers have not allowed a goal, a span of 473 minutes (473:19). Xavier last goal allowed came on Aug. 30 to #17 West Virginia. During that stretch Xavier has a 13-0 goal differential.
Junior Samantha Dewey has led the Xavier offense with a team best 10 points on four goals and two assists. Three of her tallies have been game-winning goals.
Another junior sets the tone for the Musketeer defense as Toni Bizzarro has the lion's share of minutes in goal this season. She has allowed seven goals in 745:41 in the net, posting four shutouts as she has made 40 saves.
Bluejays Look to Start BIG EAST play Strong
Since joining the BIG EAST Creighton has claimed a win just one time in five tries, going 1-4-0 in five contests. One interesting note is the Bluejays have faced just two opponents to open BIG EAST play, battling Marquette in each of the first four seasons and Xavier both last season and again in 2019.
Overall the Bluejays are a combined 11-8-2 in the opening match of conference play. Sunday will mark the third time Creighton has opened BIG EAST action at home.
Sullivan Notches 13 Saves, Including a PK, in Loss to #20 Oklahoma State
Battling her first ranked opponent, redshirt freshman Katie Sullivan brought her game to the next level with a career-high 13 saves on Sept. 14. Although the Bluejays fell, 2-0, Sullivan shined as she faced 28 shots in the match. The highlight for Sullivan came in the 87th minute as the net minder stopped a penalty kick from Cowgirl Hannah Webb.
Sullivan's 13 saves tied for the fourth highest in a single match and the second most in Morrison Stadium for the Bluejays.
Blach Sidelined for the Remainder of 2018 Season
Redshirt sophomore Haylee Blach saw her season cut short in Creighton's 2-1 win over South Dakota on Sept. 7 as the Colorado native suffered a tear to her right ACL.
