Houser's Early Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win over South Dakota State

Brookings, S.D. -- An early goal from senior Kaira Houser was all the Bluejay defense needed as Creighton closed its marathon five-match road trip with a 1-0 win over South Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 2.
The win moved Creighton to 2-3-0 on the season, while the Jackrabbits fell to 3-3-0 overall.
Freshman Aline Reinkober set the tone for her team in the opening minute as the German player sliced through the Jackrabbit defense for a shot on goal in the opening minute of play.
Reinkober factored in the Bluejay goal moments later, beating the defense into the South Dakota State side of the pitch. She bounced a pass off a defender to Houser along the left side, giving the senior a lane to the goal. Houser took the play from there, beating two defenders before striking the ball into the net from 12 yards away with 9:04 showing on the clock.
Creighton's defense took over from that point as the Bluejays did not allow a shot on goal to the Jackrabbits in the first half.
Reinkober opened the second period in the same manner as she did in the first, firing off a shot in the first minute. South Dakota State's offense was held to three shots on goal, while Bluejay goalkeeper Katie Sullivan was equal to challenge each time. Sullivan recorded her second clean sheet of the week with three saves.
"Coming into this match I was very proud of our leadership group. I saw in warm-up that our focus was as good as it's been all season," said head coach Ross Paule. "It was a match that we dictated the flow. We thrive off keeping and moving the ball and today was one of the best performances I've seen from this group."
Creighton hosts its first home match of the season on Friday, Sept. 7 as the Bluejays kick off the 7th Annual Socctoberfest at 4:30 pm against South Dakota.
"We can't wait to get home to play in front of an energetic crowd," added Paule. "I expect the same type of intensity we saw today."
