Women's Soccer Kick Starts Socctoberfest by downing South Dakota 2-1 in overtime

Omaha, Neb. -- Women's soccer delivered book ended goals to open Creighton's 7th Annual Socctoberfest celebration with a 2-1 win over South Dakota on Friday, Sept. 7.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 3-3-0 on the season, while the Coyotes fell to 2-2-2.
The opening 15 minutes of the match had the look of a blowout win for the Jays as freshman punched the first shot of the match over 25 feet into the air. The wind almost forced Parker Rytz to misjudge the ball and allow a goal in the opening moments. Just seconds later the Reinkober stole a failed clear by the Coyote defense to at the top of the box. The German freshman blasted a shot into the right corner of the net for her second goal of the season, an unassisted tally.
While the opening 15 minutes belonged to the Bluejays, Creighton did not deliver the knockout blow and the Coyotes responded with an equalizer in the 15th minute.
South Dakota's goal came on the counter attack as Amanda Carpio raced down the right side of the pitch then drilled a crossing shot from 15-yards away to knot the match at 1-1.
The game moved to halftime with the Bluejays holding an 11-4 edge on shots. Creighton once again controlled possession in the second half, firing off 13 more shots as the Bluejays out shot the Coyotes 24-7 in regulation.
While Creighton held the edge on shots and corner (7-3), South Dakota held the line to push the match into overtime.
Sophomore Kellie Fothergill stepped into the limelight in the 96th minute as she fielded a throw in from freshman Ansley Atkinson. Along the left side of the pitch, Fothergill spun around a defender and sent the game-winner of the right post, her first goal of the season.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Monday, Sept. 10 as the Bluejays travel to Kansas City to face UMKC at 7 pm.
