Bluejays look to win a second tournament of the falll
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl will take a four-shot lead into the final round of Tuesday's Big O Classic at Oak Hills Country Club after firing rounds of 70 and 74 on Monday. The Bluejay women's golf team also leads the nine-team field, finishing day one three shots ahead of Wichita State and nine shots ahead of Omaha with 18 holes to play.
Tuesday's final round starts at 9:00 a.m. with groups going off both No. 1 and No. 10 tees until 10:12 a.m.
Hudepohl tied her collegiate low round for the second time this fall with a 3-under 70 in her opening 18 holes of the morning. Starting on the 10th hole and playing as an individual, the Cincinnati native birdied No. 11, 14 and 15 to move into the red immediately. She also birdied No. 3 and No. 8 on her second nine to help offset her only round one blemish, a double-bogey on No. 18. She maintained her lead by consistently rolling in five-foot putts throughout her round as she looks to improve upon her runner-up finish at The Creighton Classic last fall at Oak Hills.
If Hudepohl is to earn medalist honors for the first time at the collegiate level, she'll have to hold off a field that features teammate Gabby Tremblay, who finished day one four shots back in second place following rounds of 73 and 75. She ranks second in the field with 26 pars to complement her four birdies on the day.
Freshman Annika Yturralde followed up an opening 77 to shoot a second-round 74 and ranks in a tie for fifth place. The California native birdied her final hole in both rounds.
CU's fourth player in the top-10 is senior Katie Allen, who is tied for eighth place after shooting a 77 and 76 on Monday. Allen owns 11 career top-10 finishes in 32 starts as a Bluejay.
Three Bluejays are tied for 20th place after a 36-hole aggregate of 158, Katherine Lemke (80-78), Mia Gaboriau (80-78) and individual Katie Berrian (76-82). Lemke will look to win at Oak Hills Country Club for the second straight year thanks to momentum picked up via birdies on two of her final four holes on Monday. Gaboriau's day was highlighted by birdies on No. 9, 10 and 11 in her second round. Berrian owned three birdies on the day.
Rounding CU's contingent was individual Claire Orcutt, who is tied for 45th after loops of 82 and 86. She birdied her third and sixth holes of the day but was done in by six double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.
Creighton's (307-303) 610 total on Monday was three shots better than Wichita State (302-311), which had owned a five-shot lead on the field after 18 holes. Omaha (308-311) will join the Bluejays and Shockers in the final pairings on Tuesday after a 619 total.
The Big O Classic features nine teams and 58 individuals competing on the Par 73 course that measures 5,952 yards. Among the individuals competing are three golfers from Nebraska and two others from Iowa.
