LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Creighton women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Wyoming on Saturday afternoon at the Wyoming Tennis Center in Laramie, Wy.
The Bluejays dropped their dual record to 12-4 with the loss, while the Cowgirls improved to 5-8 on the year with the win.
Creighton and Wyoming split the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches before Wyoming secured the first point of the dual with a tight 7-5 victory at the top doubles position.
Wyoming claimed the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-2, before senior Kate Krueger and sophomore Siri Kongara combined for a 6-2 win at the No. 3 doubles slot. In the deciding No. 1 doubles match, the Cowgirls battled to a 7-5 win to give Wyoming a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles action, Creighton fell in straight sets in all but the No. 3 singles position. Sophomore Valerie Negin delivered the strongest performance for the Bluejays capturing a 6-2 win in set one. Wyoming's Violetta Borodina battled back to claim a 7-6 (9-7) victory in set two before securing a 10-7 win in a 10-point tiebreaker in set three.
"Today was a tough challenge for us against a strong team, in front of a great crowd at their own facility," said head coach Tom Lilly. "The very high altitude also didn't help us at all. Credit to Wyoming, who played a classy match and probably won 90 percent of the big points. We will regroup and play a highly rated team tomorrow morning against Colorado State."
Creighton return to the court on Sunday morning, when the Bluejays visit Colorado State at 10:45 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colorado.
