Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Day One In Florida With Two Wins

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team opened their Florida Spring Break trip with a pair of wins over Rochester and St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday at the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida. The Bluejays captured a 6-1 win over Rochester before claiming a 7-0 win over St. Francis.
The pair of wins lifted the Bluejays to 10-2 on the year, while Rochester fell to 1-4 and St. Francis dropped to 2-3 overall this season.
In the first match of the day, Creighton wasted no time earning the doubles point. Senior Kate Krueger and junior Bianca Rademacher need only 17 minutes to capture a 6-0 win at the No. 2 doubles position, while Allison Wilcox and Jeanne Gearity teamed up for a 6-2 win at the No. 3 doubles slot to earn the first point of the match. Graduate Leanne Kendall and junior Malvika Shukla also picked up a 6-2 win at the top doubles position.
Creighton was able to match the early momentum in singles, as freshman Annika Elvestrom scored a quick 6-0, 6-0 result at the No. 5 singles position. Kongara followed moments later with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles position to give Creighton a 3-0 lead.
Kendall then clinched the overall dual for the Bluejays with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 singles position, while freshman Ana Paula Martinez got back to her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-sets win at the No. 2 spot. Wilcox wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 6 singles spot, securing a 6-1 victory for the Bluejays.
Creighton continued right where they started in the second contest of the day against St. Francis, cruising to a 7-0 victory.
Playing singles first, the Bluejays soared out to a 3-0 lead as Elvestrom captured a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 5 single spot to give Creighton the first point of the match. Wilcox followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win of her own at the No. 6 slot before Kendall claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Shukla then secured her 15th straight singles win, improving to 11-0 in singles play this spring, with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the top singles position. Kongara followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot, before Martinez finished with 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles slot.
The Bluejays quickly closed out the match with three straight victories in doubles. Wilcox and Krueger secured a 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles position while Elvestrom and Gearity teamed up for a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 doubles position. Negin and Martinez also captured an identical 6-1 win at the top doubles position.
Creighton continues play in Orlando on Tuesday against Villanova. First serve is schedule for 11:30 a.m. Central.
