GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Creighton women's tennis snagged the doubles point and overpowered Minnesota Crookston in singles on the way to a 6-1 victory on Saturday morning at the Choice Health and Fitness center in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Bluejays improved to 9-3 on the year with the win, while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-6 overall with the loss.
"It was a solid win today," stated head coach Tom Lilly. "We will work on getting healthy this next week, before heading to Florida for spring break and two more conference matches."
Creighton heated up quickly, earning the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No.3 doubles positions. Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit, the reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week, continued their strong play, capturing a 6-1 win at the No. 1 doubles position, while sophomores Karli Vo and Alem Cote posted an identical 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
The Bluejays would carry all the momentum into singles play, clinching the overall dual with straight set victories on the No. 2 thought No. 6 single courts.
Sophomore Olivia Minikle bested UMC's Kavya Singh, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles spot, before Cote cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win on the No. 4 singles court to give the Jays a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Livia Rodrigues Daud followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win on the No. 5 singles court to clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays.
Minnesota native Annika Elvestrom would push the lead to 5-0, claiming a 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win on the No. 3 singles court, while Tran picked up a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at the No. 2 singles slot to close out the victory.
Minnesota Crookston's lone win of the match came at the top singles spot as sophomore Sophie Schwartz retired with an injury after winning the first set 7-5.
Creighton will get some much-needed rest before returning to the courts on Tuesday, March 10 against Providence in Orlando, Fla.
